Yankees' Carrasco makes Opening Day roster; Schmidt to start on IL
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Saturday that right-hander Carlos Carrasco will be on the team's Opening Day roster, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN.
Cashman added that right-hander Clarke Schmidt and reliever Ian Hamilton will begin the season on the injured list.
The Yankees signed Carrasco to a major-league contract and selected him to the active roster after the veteran pitcher inked a minor-league deal in early February. He posted a 1.69 ERA with 0.94 WHIP and 15 strikeouts over 16 innings this spring.
The 38-year-old will likely start the new campaign in New York's decimated rotation. Schmidt needs to increase his pitch count after getting over a minor shoulder injury, Luis Gil is expected to miss three months with a lat strain, and ace Gerrit Cole is out for the season after elbow surgery.
Hamilton is sidelined because he needs to increase his pitch count more after dealing with an infection during spring training.
New York also placed Cole on the 60-day injured list as a procedural move.
