Report: Bregman to opt out of Red Sox deal
Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman will be returning to free agency in the offseason.
Bregman will opt out of the final two years and $80 million left ($40 million deferred) on his contract after agreeing to a three-year, $120-million pact to join the Red Sox in February, sources told Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
The 31-year-old won't have a qualifying offer attached to him this time around, which could create more potential suitors. The Red Sox forfeited their second-highest 2025 draft pick (No. 54 overall) and $500,000 in international bonus pool money after signing him.
Bregman went deep 18 times with 62 RBIs and an .821 OPS over 114 games this season en route to being named an All-Star for the third time over his 10-year career. However, he missed six weeks with a quad injury from late May to early July.
The 2024 Gold Glover finished in the 83rd percentile in outs above average this year.
Bregman, a two-time World Series champion (2017, 2022), spent nine seasons with the Houston Astros to begin his career.
