Despite lengthy injuries to the majority of the rotation, the New York Yankees still managed to set a single-season franchise record with 1,319 strikeouts.
Closer David Robertson fanned Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop with a 84-mph knuckle curve in the ninth inning on Tuesday to surpass the mark set by the 2012 staff.
Yankees' team leaders in strikeouts this season:
Pitcher | K | IP |
---|---|---|
M. Tanaka | 139 | 134.2 |
H. Kuroda | 137 | 191 |
D. Betances | 135 | 90 |
D. Robertson | 92 | 62.1 |
D. Phelps | 90 | 111 |
Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda combined to miss 152 games while CC Sabathia underwent season-ending knee surgery in late July, but the acquisitions of Brandon McCarthy and emergence of rookie Shane Greene helped quell the loss of those starters.
