Red Sox GM: 'I would be surprised if there were any additions' before spring training
After a busy offseason, the Boston Red Sox finally appear content with their roster heading into spring training.
On the same day the team avoided arbitration with offseason acquisition Wade Miley, agreeing to a three-year deal, general manager Ben Cherington downplayed the chance that the Red Sox make any other drastic moves over the next three weeks.
"I would expect the group we have for spring training is in place and I would be surprised if there were any additions," Cherington told Jason Mastrodonato of The Springfield Republican.
"I couldn't completely rule out a non-roster deal with someone but we feel good about where we are with our position player and pitching group, so this is probably the group you'll see when we take the field in Fort Myers."
The Red Sox had been linked to Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels over the offseason, but have reportedly refused to part with top prospect, Blake Swihart. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro has also stated that he believes Hamels will open the season with the team.
The decision also likely eliminates the Red Sox from agreeing to a deal with free-agent pitcher James Shields, who will reportedly sign this week.
