Giants' Posey bothered by sore ankle

Ron Chenoy / USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey was held out of Wednesday's finale in Arizona because of soreness in his surgically repaired ankle, manager Bruce Bochy told reporters.

Bochy described the day off as rest for Posey, who shattered the same left ankle during a home-plate collision in 2011. The three-time All-Star isn't expected to miss additional time down the stretch.

Posey has remained remarkably healthy the past four years, appearing in an average of 143 games per season since breaking his ankle. The 2012 MVP is hitting a team-leading .329/.386/.487 with 17 homers this season.

The slumping Giants entered Wednesday having lost seven of their past 10 and remain 8 1/2 games back of a playoff spot.
