Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander has shown the ability to dominate games across his 11-year career - becoming a six-time All-Star and winning an American League Cy Young and MVP award - but growing facial hair hasn't always been his forte.

Verlander showed some nostalgia on his Instagram account Thursday when he posted a photo of himself pitching in high school, while admitting that growing a goatee didn't go according to plan.

Verlander has since had no problem sporting a fine beard now that he's 32 years old, frequently sporting one during 157 of his career wins.

He's also donned some finely groomed facial fuzz during both of the no-hitters he's tossed during his tenure as a Tiger.
