Report: Yankees use Newton, Wilson as opposing examples in media training
As one of the world's most prominent sports teams, playing in the nation's largest media market, the New York Yankees can't undersell the importance of appropriately interacting with the media.
To that end, the team appears to be using two of the NFL's recognizable stars as contrasting examples in some spring training media sessions for its players.
Yankees pitchers and catchers were recently shown video of Russell Wilson and Cam Newton that compared how the two star quarterbacks handled press conferences after losing a Super Bowl, reports Andrew Marchand of ESPN.
Wilson, despite throwing a goal-line interception to seal the Seattle Seahawks' defeat, answered all questions and took responsibility after Super Bowl XLIX.
Newton, meanwhile, was far less receptive following the Carolina Panthers' loss on football's biggest stage earlier in February. After giving short answers to several questions and overhearing a victorious Denver Broncos player nearby, Newton simply walked off the podium.
The Yankees will look to avoid distractions as the club attempts to build upon its return to the postseason last year - a loss in the AL wild-card game.
