Ranking the 10 best goals from MLS opening weekend
Major League Soccer kicked off the 2019 campaign Saturday and there was no shortage of storylines.
An astonishing snow storm, record low temperatures, a six-goal thriller, and a last-second equalizer from a debutant marked an exciting weekend, and that's just the highlights of the Colorado Rapids' frenzied home draw with the Portland Timbers.
With matchday numero uno in the books, here's a look at the 10 best goals from MLS' opening weekend:
10. Daniel Steres (LA Galaxy)
Sure, there's nothing remarkable about Daniel Steres' towering header, but it did mark 16-year-old LA Galaxy substitute debutant Efrain Alvarez's first involvement in a first-team goal. Put that cheeky chop and subsequent outside-of-the-boot assist on repeat.
What a play from the 16-year-old @efrain_alvarez1 👀@Dsteres44 gets things level at @dignityhealthsp! #LAvCHI pic.twitter.com/UqKYKp2IEd

9. Chris Mueller (Orlando City)
It's often said that one of the toughest shots to stop is one that bounces directly in front of the 'keeper, though it probably would've helped if NYCFC's Sean Johnson didn't have those pre-match pints. Regardless, congrats on the goal, Chris Mueller.

8. Michael Bradley (Toronto FC)
Here's a bold prediction: if Michael Bradley is afforded unmarked central runs into the penalty area this season, he'll score 78 times, smashing Josef Martinez's 31-goal standard from last term. That's a striker's finish.

7. Nacho Piatti (Montreal Impact)
Imagine hitting a ball with as much potency as Nacho Piatti did from an acute angle against the San Jose Earthquakes. Now imagine doing that on your off foot. What do you call a diverse set of footballing skills that are not your own? Nacho skills.
Nacho Piatti with the 🚀 and we are level! #SJvMTL https://t.co/3gO5RZUq9p

6. Ebenezer Ofori (New York City FC)
Golazo? Perhaps not, but let's not be Scrooges, and instead hail Ebenezer Ofori's worm-burning left-footed strike from range in Saturday's frenetic four-goal draw with Orlando City.

5. Erik Godoy (Vancouver Whitecaps)
If the Vancouver Whitecaps were waiting for Godoy (shoutouts to noted MLS fan Samuel Beckett), they didn't have to wait long. On-loan Erik Godoy waited all of six minutes to score his first goal for the club, a deft finish courtesy of a looping free-kick delivery from Yordy Reyna.

4. Mauro Manotas (Houston Dynamo)
Good: Mauro Manotas' slick leaping backheel flick. Bad: Real Salt Lake 'keeper Nick Rimando's reflexes. Ugly: The caption on Houston's tweet. C'mon.
The man just loves scoring soccer goals.#HOUvRSL #ForeverOrange https://t.co/XZAtmZbx3B

3. Diego Rossi (LAFC)
*In Ray Hudson's voice* Take a bow, Diego Rossi, that thing curled like a helpless hot dog in boiling water.
Diego.... ROSSI!!!

2. Leonardo Bertone (FC Cincinnati)
Nobody expected expansion outfit FC Cincinnati to be any good, and if Saturday's lopsided defeat to the Seattle Sounders is any indication, they're not. That said, there are worst ways to score a franchise-first MLS goal than Leonardo Bertone's thunderous volley.

1. Adama Diomande (LAFC)
What a way to win a match at the death, and with a beer shower at the North End to boot. Welcome back, MLS.
