GSP's trainer thinks the fighter 'will make a splash soon'
Georges St-Pierre could return to the Octagon in 2016.
ESPN's Brett Okamoto caught up with GSP's trainer, Firas Zahabi, in Las Vegas ahead of UFC 195, and Zahabi had some interesting things to say about the Canadian fighter's future.
St-Pierre's "reportedly undergoing" his six-week test training camp, Okamoto writes, and he all but got confirmation from Zahabi.
"Georges is in Montreal right now," Zahabi said. "He's getting his body in shape and we're going to explore options in the near future. I don't put any pressure on Georges. I don't ask him if he wants to fight. He tells me whether he wants to fight or not. I sit there and listen to him. ... He's still the best. I think Georges is going to make a splash soon."
Zahabi said he believes there's much fight left in St-Pierre, and that GSP clearly still loves the sport and is excited about resuming his career.
The six-week training session "is just to see what his body feels like," Zahabi said, adding that St-Pierre's spirits are up since he took his hiatus from the UFC in late December 2013.
"I think Georges overworked Georges. ... I think over time his batteries drained and he needed time off," Zahabi said. "Now, he's one of the happiest people I've ever met. ... Remember, Georges never had a personal life. I go home to my wife and kids, go to family get-togethers - Georges was always preparing. Now he's balanced and I think he's better for it."
