NBA Game Summary - Utah at Dallas
Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - J.J. Barea had 22 points and the Dallas Mavericks held off the Utah Jazz 87-82 on Wednesday night.
Dirk Nowitzki posted 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Mavericks, who head into the All-Star break having won six of their last eight games.
"He really got hot in pick and rolls, and we needed it. We struggled to score," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said of Barea.
Trey Burke tallied 16 points, six boards and four assists, Derrick Favors supplied 14 points and Gordon Hayward provided 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Utah, which has dropped six of its last nine contests.
Burke jumpstarted an 8-0 Jazz spurt with a 3-pointer and Favors split a pair of foul shots to cap it and cut the deficit to 79-77 with 1:49 remaining.
Monta Ellis sunk two foul shots, and Nowitzki made 2-of-3 from the charity stripe a possession later to put the Mavs back up by six with under a minute left.
Utah, however, got right back in it. Favors recorded a three-point play and Hayward's fastbreak dunk following an Elijah Millsap steal whittled the gap to 83-82 with 15.8 ticks to play.
Ellis hit two bonus shots with 13.4 on the clock and Hayward turned the ball over at the other end. A pair of Barea free throws in the waning moments sealed the outcome.
"At that point I should have just decided to shoot it, but it's not where we lost the game," Hayward said of the turnover.
Earlier, Dallas closed the opening frame on a 16-2 swing and led 22-9 following a quarter of play.
Hayward finished off a 10-2 flurry with a step-back jumper to cut the gap to 36-35 late in the second.
The Mavs were up 39-37 at the break and 64-57 after three.
