Young: No question I'll be better than Doncic in 5-10 years
Rookies Trae Young and Luka Doncic will forever be connected thanks to the draft-day deal that saw the Atlanta Hawks trade the latter to the Dallas Mavericks for the Oklahoma standout and a protected 2019 first-round pick.
While Doncic may be having the better season, there's no doubt in Young's mind that he'll be the better player five-to-10 years down the road.
"In my eyes, it's not a question - it's going to be me," Young said on ESPN's "The Jump" on Monday. "But that's just the competitive nature in my blood, and I think that's the no-brainer with me."
Young insists the deal has "worked out for both teams." While the 20-year-old is impressing in his rookie campaign by averaging 16.2 points and a team-high 7.3 assists through 48 games played, Doncic just happens to be having one for the ages.
It hasn't been lost on the Hawks point guard.
"Obviously I hear everything that goes on. You can't miss it," Young said. "Luka's having a really good year so far. And for me, all I do is try to focus on myself and my team. I know it's easy to say, but I'm really dedicated to working extremely hard every day for my teammates and things like that."
On Sunday, Doncic became the first teenager in NBA history to notch a 30-point triple-double - his latest accomplishment during a statement year. Through 48 games, he's averaging 20.5 points, 6.9 boards, and 5.4 assists per contest.
While the two budding stars are rivals on the court, they've been cordial off it. Young exchanged numbers with Doncic over the summer and has really gotten to know the Slovenian well.
"Checking up on each other and stuff," Young said. "He's a really good dude, for sure."
