Wade on game-winner vs. Warriors: 'It's special for me'
Perennial All-Star Dwyane Wade is inching closer to retirement with just a handful of games remaining in the season.
So when the Miami Heat guard hit the game-winning shot from the top of the arc against the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, he basked in the moment.
"It's special for me," Wade said after the 126-125 victory, according to ESPN's Nick Friedell. "Obviously as a team we needed this win bad, but we kept fighting, everybody. I've been in this position so many times, and so many times you don't make the shot. And the one I make is a one-legged flick from my chest, it's crazy. But great to do it in front of the fans. This is a fun moment."
Warriors superstar Stephen Curry was visibly stunned by the shot as he waited for referees to confirm the basket. He said it was amazing to watch last-second heroics from a legend.
"Just a lot of smiles," Curry said about his conversation with Wade after the loss. "Frustrated smiles from our standpoint. But it was something special, him making a play like that, his last year in this building. I'd much rather see him jumping on the scorer's table when we're not on the court with him. But those are iconic moments that he's had. Deep down it was cool to see even though we lost."
Wade, 37, has still been an effective player during his final season, averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 50 appearances.
The clutch bucket gave Wade 25 points during what will likely be his final meeting against the Warriors.
The Heat (27-33) desperately needed the victory after dropping nine of 11 games prior to Wednesday. They now sit a half game behind the Charlotte Hornets for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
