Popovich negotiating new contract with Spurs
Gregg Popovich is already thinking about returning for a 24th season as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.
The 70-year-old told reporters Monday that he's in negotiations with the club on a new deal, as relayed by Jabari Young of The Athletic.
The Spurs were eliminated from the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, but their 22nd straight trip to the postseason tied the all-time NBA record.
Overall, San Antonio has gone 1,245-575 under Popovich, winning five NBA championships and finishing as the runner-up once. The Spurs have also claimed 13 division titles during his tenure and set an NBA record with 18 straight seasons of 50 wins or more.
Popovich is a three-time NBA Coach of the Year and recently surpassed Lenny Wilkins to become the league's all-time winningest coach (regular season and playoffs combined) with his 1,413th victory. He's the longest-tenured active coach in the Association and has posted just one losing season during his 23 years in charge of San Antonio.
Meanwhile, the legendary bench boss took over for Mike Krzyzewski as head coach of Team USA's men's program following the 2016 Olympics. Popovich has committed to coaching the Americans at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China and at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
