Chauncey Billups sounds off on Lakers' 'disrespect' of Tyronn Lue
The Los Angeles Lakers appeared set to hire Tyronn Lue as their next head coach before hitting a snag during contract negotiations.
Lue reportedly rejected a three-year, $18-million offer, which left ESPN analyst Chauncey Billups dumbfounded. The 17-season NBA vet was insulted by the club's offer, referencing the five-year deal Monty Williams received from the Phoenix Suns and four-year contract signed by Luke Walton with the Sacramento Kings.
"The dysfunction obviously starts at the top anywhere, period," Billups said during ESPN's "NBA Countdown" on Thursday. "But to offer this dude three years, when you're just coming off offering Luke (Walton) five? And to try and pick his staff? You didn't pick Luke's staff. It's disrespectful ... I don't know what they're doing. I don't know where they're going.
"The disrespect is unbelievable that they've given to Ty Lue," Billups continued. "He's a championship coach. This is an organization with 16 (NBA) championships. You would think that they would value a champion, but they haven't."
Lue coached LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA championship during the 2015-16 season. The 42-year-old followed that up with two more trips to The Finals and went 128-83 overall as Cleveland's head coach.
The Lakers have reportedly added Frank Vogel, Lionel Hollins, and Mike Woodson to their coaching search and are reportedly set to interview ex-Memphis Grizzlies head coach J.B. Bickerstaff on Friday.
