Report: DeRozan unhappy with Spurs; Heat had interest at trade deadline
San Antonio Spurs forward DeMar DeRozan is "not happy" with the club, CNBC's Jabari Young said during a Friday radio appearance on ESPN San Antonio.
The four-time All-Star holds a $27.7-million player option for the 2020-21 season, but he'll reportedly decline it if he doesn't reach an extension agreement with the Spurs by late June.
DeRozan appeared to shoot down rumors of his displeasure with the team Saturday.
Even if DeRozan opts in to the final year of his contract, there's no guarantee he'll be with San Antonio next season. With the NBA's salary cap projected to drop in 2020-21, the Spurs could trade the veteran to gain additional financial flexibility.
Should San Antonio decide to move the 30-year-old, there may already be at least one potential suitor: the Miami Heat.
"During the trade deadline, I was hearing Miami was making a push for DeMar DeRozan," Young said. "He's close with Jimmy Butler."
Before the NBA suspended play indefinitely, DeRozan was having one of the most efficient campaigns in his career. He's averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 boards, and 5.6 assists to go along with personal bests in two-point field-goal percentage (53.5%) and overall field-goal percentage (52.6%) so far this season.
Though DeRozan has had personal success with the Spurs, his long-term fit in San Antonio is a question mark. The USC product has attempted 65% of his shots from mid-range this season, ranking him in the 100th percentile among NBA players, according to Cleaning the Glass. He's also attempted just 30 triples across 61 appearances in 2019-20.
