Divac takes responsibility for passing over Luka: 'That was my decision'

Hall of Fame center Vlade Divac stepped down as Sacramento Kings general manager Friday.

The former Kings star made his share of questionable decisions during his time on the job, most notably the drafting of Marvin Bagley over Luka Doncic in 2018, which he says caused a rift with owner Vivek Ranadive.

"That was my decision," Divac told Marcos Breton of The Sacramento Bee. "I still believe Marvin has big upside. But I needed more time to prove it. I'm sure Marvin is going to prove everybody wrong. But in this league, you need to produce right now. People don't have patience, but I'm OK with that."

Divac also has a close relationship with Doncic's father but has maintained on multiple occasions that Bagley was a better fit for the Kings' roster.

The oft-injured power forward has managed just 75 appearances for Sacramento over the past two seasons, averaging 14.8 points and 7.6 boards. Bagley played in just 13 contests in 2019-20 and was unable to suit up in the bubble after spraining his foot during a scrimmage.

Meanwhile, Doncic already looks like a future MVP candidate in just his second year in the Association. The Slovenian star averaged 28.8 points, 9.4 boards, and 8.8 assists, leading the Dallas Mavericks to their first playoff berth since 2015-16.
