The Los Angeles Lakers and guard Dennis Schroder have begun talks on a long-term contract extension, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Discussions are expected to resume as soon as mid-February, per Wojnarowski.

Schroder reportedly turned down the Lakers' initial offer of two years and $33.4 million prior to the 2020-21 campaign. He's eligible to receive an extension for as much as $83 million over four years starting Feb. 16.

Los Angeles owns Schroder's Bird rights and would be able to go over the salary cap to re-sign him if a new deal isn't struck before the offseason.

The Lakers acquired Schroder in November from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 27-year-old averaged 18.9 points on 46.9% shooting last season and finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting.

Schroder assumed the starting point guard role in his Lakers debut Tuesday. He registered 14 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds in the club's season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.
