Nets officially sign 6-time All-Star Griffin
Blake Griffin officially joined the Brooklyn Nets, the team announced Monday.
"We're fortunate to be able to add a player of Blake's caliber to our roster at this point in the season," general manager Sean Marks said in a statement. "Blake is a versatile frontcourt player with a long track record of success in our league, and we're excited about the impact he'll make for us both on and off the court in Brooklyn."
Griffin, who turns 32 next week, reached a buyout agreement with the Detroit Pistons on Friday. The six-time All-Star reportedly relinquished $13.3 million of the $75 million-plus remaining on his contract in order to become a free agent.
In 20 outings with the Pistons this year, he averaged just 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, posting a poor effective field-goal rate of 45.3%.
Though career-long struggles with injuries have effectively grounded Griffin's once jaw-dropping aerial assaults on the rim, the 6-foot-9 power forward averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game as recently as 2018-19. In recent years, he's emerged as more of a perimeter-oriented playmaker.
Griffin joins one of the Eastern Conference's title contenders, adding another big-name presence to a group that already features fellow generational talents Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving, plus his former longtime Los Angeles Clippers frontcourt mate, DeAndre Jordan.
