AD: Team talked with Russ about turnovers
Los Angeles Lakers big man Anthony Davis says the team chatted with Russell Westbrook in hopes of helping the All-Star cut down on his worrying trend of turnovers.
Westbrook leads the league with 5.3 turnovers per game. He's on pace this season to match his career high of 438, which is the second-highest mark in league history behind James Harden (464).
"We had a conversation about what he wants to see from us so we can help him cut down the turnovers," Davis said following Wednesday's 120-117 overtime victory over the Miami Heat, according to NBA.com's Mark Medina. "We talked about it, and it showed tonight."
Westbrook led the Lakers with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists Wednesday. However, he also had a game-high eight turnovers, something Davis took note of after glancing at the box score.
"I say that, and he got eight. But at least it wasn't - he had a triple-double, not a quadruple-double," Davis joked.
To Westbrook's credit, he scored or assisted on 11 of the Lakers' 12 fourth-quarter buckets and had zero turnovers in the final frame of regulation.
The Lakers have at times been hampered by a stagnant offense with both LeBron James and Westbrook, two dominant ball-handlers, in the lineup. However, with James missing the last four games due to an abdominal strain, Westbrook has averaged 6.25 turnovers per contest during that span. After Wednesday's game, Westbrook addressed his role with the team.
"You have to also make sure to keep a healthy balance of finding my teammates, picking my spots, along with scoring the basketball," Westbrook said. "Which is, you know, not always the easiest thing to do."
The 32-year-old added: "But I can always figure it out."
