Celtics' Robert Williams reportedly out several weeks with knee injury
Boston Celtics center Robert Williams sustained a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee during Sunday's matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Celtics announced Monday, according to Kyle Hightower of The Associated Press.
The Texas A&M product will miss at least several weeks, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Celtics head coach Ime Udoka said Monday the team will "evaluate surgical options" for Williams.
Williams, 24, was enjoying a strong campaign in his first season as a full-time starter, averaging 10 points, 9.6 boards, two assists, and 2.2 blocks over 61 appearances. He ranks first in the Association in defensive rating (102.1) and fifth in total offensive rebounds (238) as a crucial member of the Celtics' top-ranked defense.
Williams' 3.8% block percentage ranks in the 96th percentile among big men, according to Cleaning the Glass. The 2018 first-round pick also owns the second-best effective field-goal percentage (73.6%) and sits ninth in contested shots per game (11.0).
Boston rewarded Williams last summer with a four-year extension worth $54 million. However, his durability has been an issue in previous seasons, as he's missed 80 games since entering the league four years ago.
Daniel Theis, who was reacquired from the Houston Rockets at the trade deadline, will likely start at the five. The veteran made 106 appearances in the Celtics' starting lineup during his first stint with the club.
