Kings sign veteran JaVale McGee
The Sacramento Kings signed center JaVale McGee, the team announced Saturday.
The Dallas Mavericks signed McGee to a three-year, $20.1-million contract last summer. However, the club waived McGee earlier this week and scratched the remaining two years on his contract following a disappointing 2022-23 campaign.
McGee averaged 4.4 points and 2.5 boards in just 8.5 minutes over 42 appearances during his lone year with Dallas. He started seven of the Mavs' first nine contests before gradually falling out of the rotation.
McGee's reported addition creates a bit of a logjam at the five as the Kings already have Alex Len, Nerlens Noel, and Neemias Queta competing for minutes behind starting center Domantas Sabonis.
But McGee brings championship experience to a young locker room. The 35-year-old won a pair of titles with the Golden State Warriors and added another ring as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Just two seasons ago, McGee played a key reserve role on a 64-win Phoenix Suns squad, registering 9.2 points, 6.7 boards, and 1.1 blocks per contest. He posted a 3.5% block percentage that same campaign, which ranked in the 95th percentile among big men, per Cleaning the Glass.
