Former MLB star Alex Rodriguez and tech entrepreneur Marc Lore are expected to exercise their option to gain controlling ownership of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and WNBA's Minnesota Lynx from majority owner Glen Taylor as early as Thursday, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Rodriguez and Lore reportedly have until Sunday to make a decision.
By exercising their option, Rodriguez and Lore will formalize their intent to purchase an additional 40% of both franchises from Taylor, giving the pair an 80% share of the two teams and majority ownership by early 2024, Wojnarowski reports.
Their majority purchase is subject to approval by the NBA's Board of Governors.
Rodriguez and Lore agreed to buy the Timberwolves and Lynx from Taylor for $1.5 billion in 2021. As part of their agreement, Rodriguez and Lore had to purchase the clubs in three installments before assuming full control of both franchises.
The T-Wolves sit atop the West with a 22-7 record. The Lynx are coming off a first-round playoff exit to the Connecticut Sun.
