Report: Mavs acquiring Klay in multi-team sign-and-trade
Free-agent wing Klay Thompson plans to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50-million contract, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Thompson ends his historic Warriors tenure as part of a multi-team sign-and-trade that will also reportedly send former Mavericks wing Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets will trade two second-round picks for Green, with one of them potentially going to Golden State.
The Warriors will receive two future second-rounders from Dallas, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
The five-time All-Star had four-year offers for more money elsewhere but decided to take less for the opportunity to win a fifth championship, plus the difference in state taxes. Thompson reportedly met with Dallas, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Los Angeles Clippers at the opening of free agency after the Warriors decided to explore other avenues.
Golden State plans to sign ex-Philadelphia 76ers guard De'Anthony Melton to a one-year, $12.8-million deal, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Thompson averaged 17.9 points this past campaign, his lowest since his sophomore season in the NBA. He started 63 games but came off the bench for 14. The Warriors finished 2023-24 with a 46-36 record, though they missed the playoffs after losing in the play-in tournament.
The Mavericks are fresh off a run to the NBA Finals, losing to the Boston Celtics in five games. Dallas created space to acquire Thompson by reportedly trading wing Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons for guard Quentin Grimes. The Mavs also signed former New Orleans Pelicans wing Naji Marshall to a three-year, $27-million deal.
Thompson spent 11 seasons with the Warriors after being drafted 11th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. He played an important role in the franchise's success, helping win titles in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022. He made two All-NBA third teams in 2015 and 2016.
The 34-year-old ranks second in 3-point field goals in Warriors history behind former backcourt mate Stephen Curry, making 2,481. He had been the second-longest-tenured player with a single franchise, behind Curry.
Golden State released a statement Monday night thanking the team legend for his 11 years of service.
"Klay's legacy will live on forever and we look forward to the day we can retire his No. 11 jersey at Chase Center, where he will join a host of Warriors immortals, including those who helped shape this recent dynasty - himself included."
