Report: Rockets, Sengun nearing contract extension
The Houston Rockets and center Alperen Sengun have a "legitimate chance" of signing a contract extension in the coming weeks, sources told Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.
Sengun will become a restricted free agent next summer if the two parties don't reach an agreement by the Oct. 21 deadline. The Turkish international is eligible for a five-year, $224-million extension.
"We've been talking," Sengun said Monday at Houston's media day, according to Feigen. "I want to get the contract, and (Houston is) trying to negotiate with them. So, it's been good."
He added: "We're going to make it work. We still have time, you know, and hopefully, we can make it work."
Sengun, 22, had a breakout year last season, averaging 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and five assists in 63 games. The 6-foot-11 center missed the final 18 games with a sprained ankle and a bruised knee.
Former No. 2 overall pick Jalen Green is also extension-eligible but told reporters Monday that his contract situation is "not really the focus right now."
The Rockets will be looking to make the postseason in Year 2 under head coach Ime Udoka after barely missing the play-in tournament last season. They finished 11th in the Western Conference with a 41-41 record.
Houston will begin its 2024-25 campaign on Oct. 23 against the Charlotte Hornets.
