Warriors establish annual award for late assistant Dejan Milojevic
The Golden State Warriors are creating the Dejan Milojevic Brate Award, which will be given annually to a "basketball operations staff member who embodies the spirit, dedication, and legacy of the late Dejan Milojevic," the team announced in a statement Friday.
"Recipients will be selected for their impactful contributions both on and off the court, their unwavering support of teammates and the organization, and their embodiment of key values such as mentorship, positivity, integrity, and community spirit."
Milojevic was an assistant coach with Golden State. He died from a heart attack last January while attending a private team dinner in Utah. Milojevic was 46 years old.
Brate translates to "brother" in Serbian. The award is meant to symbolize the "camaraderie, loyalty, and connection Milojevic brought to everyone he worked with."
Milojevic was in his third season with the Warriors organization when he died. He was a member of the 2022 championship coaching staff.
The Serbian had previously spent time coaching Buducnost in Montenegro and Mega Basket in Serbia. He had a 14-year playing career, winning three Adriatic League MVP titles from 2004-06.
Golden State will announce the inaugural winner at the end of the regular season.
