Donovan: Bulls lack direction amid rebuild
Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan isn't sure how the organization is going to approach its impending rebuild.
"Clearly, we're making a shift," he said, according to Cody Westerlund of 670 The Score. "I want to be part of building something. But what direction are we going? And how are we going to build it? And what we are going to do? I don't think anybody inside the organization has those answers right now."
Donovan acknowledged that the organization was stuck "in the middle" and recent changes were the best course of action.
The Bulls have appeared in just one postseason in the last seven years - a 4-1 series loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the opening round of the 2022 playoffs. The organization hasn't won 50 games since 2014-15.
Chicago began to tear things down over the offseason when it shipped All-Defensive guard Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for 22-year-old playmaker Josh Giddey.
The team then moved six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan - who was set to become an unrestricted free agent - to the Sacramento Kings via a sign-and-trade for Chris Duarte.
The Bulls traded two-time All-Star Zach LaVine to the Kings as part of a three-team deal Sunday. They got Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and their own 2025 first-round pick in return.
Vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas has reportedly become open to the idea of moving former top-five pick Patrick Williams, even though he inked a five-year, $90-million extension in the summer.
Veteran big man Nikola Vucevic's name has been floated around the league, with the Golden State Warriors considered the top suitors.
Chicago seems willing to build around emerging guard Coby White and 2024 first-round pick Matas Buzelis. The team is also reportedly interested in re-signing the oft-injured Lonzo Ball.
The Bulls are 21-29 and sit 10th in the East.
