Bradley Beal has stress reaction in leg, to be re-evaluated after All-Star break
It turns out the recent injury plaguing Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal is more serious than just a sore toe.
After being ruled out for a third straight game against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, Beal went in for a toe exam and was diagnosed with a minor stress reaction in his lower right fibula, Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix reports. He will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break.
It's the exact injury that prematurely ended Beal's rookie season in 2012-13. There's no indication it's as severe this time around, but the recurrence is obviously disconcerting.
The Wizards catch a little bit of a break in terms of timing, as Wednesday's game is their last before a nine-day layoff, but timetables with stress reactions are hard to predict. New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday was given a 2-4 week timetable when diagnosed with a stress reaction in the same part of his leg on Jan. 21, and his return remains indeterminate.
Beal also missed the first nine games of the season with a wrist fracture, and while the Wizards managed to go 7-2 without him, it came against a tissue-soft schedule. Already mired in a bit of a slump, the Wizards shouldn't expect that kind of result if Beal is still on the shelf when they exit the break.
In his third NBA season, Beal is averaging 15 points and three assists, while shooting a career-best 43.6 percent from 3-point range.
