The Oklahoma City Thunder selected Kentucky center Dakari Johnson with the 48th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft on Thursday night, making him the sixth Wildcat taken on the night.
Size has never gone out of style in the NBA. Even short on playing time and production in two college seasons, Johnson warrants the No. 48 pick because he's a quarter-inch short of 7-feet, has a 7-foot-2 wingspan, and owns a 9-foot-4 standing reach. With a 265-pound, NBA-ready frame, the Thunder likely see a potential backup center.
And that may be all Johnson is, as he's lacking in skill. He plays below the rim, has some conditioning issues, and doesn't show strong shot-blocking instincts.
Still, he uses his body incredibly well in establishing position and fighting for rebounds. Johnson's assets make him nearly bust-proof, according to some models, and that's an important consideration for the Thunder, who aren't swinging for the fences so much as looking for gap-filling contributors and steady complementary pieces at this point.
