Grab your earplugs, folks, because Kevin Garnett still has some basketball left in him.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have announced the re-signing of the 39-year-old, with the deal reportedly worth $16 million over two years.
Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune reports that there's likely a provision in the deal where if Garnett elects not to play out the second year of his contract, he'll be able to move right into a managerial role for the franchise.
"We are excited that KG has decided to continue his career with us," said team president and head coach Flip Saunders in the official press release.
"When we acquired him last year we hoped this would evolve into a longer-term relationship. KG re-signing shows his commitment to our franchise and his belief in the direction we’re headed. I know KG will bring his usual strong work ethic and leadership, and be a positive influence for our young guys as we continue to grow together.”
Garnett is entering his 21st season in the league, something only Robert Parish and Kevin Willis can say they've done. One would assume that 2015-16 will be his last year as an active competitor, and at that point he will become a member of the Timberwolves' front office earlier than expected, although assuming what the eccentric big will do is never wise.
In the meantime, Garnett will work more as a mentor to some of Minnesota's rising young talent, including 2015 NBA Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins, as well as No. 1 overall pick Karl-Anthony Towns.
Garnett averaged 7.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in five appearances with Minnesota last season after coming over in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets.
He was selected with the No. 5 pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, currently ranking as the Timberwolves' all-time leader in games (932), points (19,079), rebounds (10,568), assists (4,154), steals (1,287), and blocks (1,580).
