Spurs' Marjanovic diagnosed with ankle injury, will miss Eurobasket 2015

The San Antonio Spurs have diagnosed Serbian center Boban Marjanovic with significant bony edema in his left ankle, the team announced Tuesday.

The injury potentially compromises Marjanovic's long-term health and ability to play basketball. Therefore, the Spurs have informed Marjanovic and the Serbian Basketball Federation that the 26-year-old will not be allowed to play in the upcoming Eurobasket tournament.

Reports surfaced last week that Marjanovic had played through the Serbian League finals with a foot injury. He was also said to be in a protective walking boot and on his way to the United States for further testing.

The Spurs signed the 7-foot-3, 290-pound Marjanovic to a reported one-year, $1.2-million deal in July. After earning Serbian Super League MVP honors and an All-Euroleague first-team nod for his play last season, Marjanovic was billed as a potential solution for the Spurs' vacancy at backup center.

The bigger worry, however, is for the Serbian national team, as losing its starting center could potentially sink the team's chances of securing an Olympic berth this fall.
