Report: Dorell Wright signs with China's Chongqing Dragons
One of the NBA's best remaining free agents is headed overseas.
Dorell Wright has signed a one-year deal with the Chongqing Soaring Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association, according to international reporter David Pick.
It was reported earlier Monday that Wright was mulling the offer but preferred to stay in the NBA, possibly through a reunion with the Miami Heat. Wright heading to China is somewhat surprising given his track record as an effective floor-spacer who also saw considerable run as a stretch-four last season.
The 11-year veteran had one of his worst seasons in 2014-15, averaging 4.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.3 minutes, but even in a down year he shot 38 percent from outside. In 549 career games with four teams, the 2004 No. 19 pick has averaged 8.4 points and 3.8 rebounds while knocking down 36.5 percent of his long-range looks.
At age 29, Wright still has plenty of time to make his way back to the NBA, and China could be a means of maximizing his earnings for the 2015-16 season. The Chinese season ends early enough that Wright could conceivably sign with an NBA team in the spring and be playoff-eligible.
Signing Wright may not be the biggest news forthcoming for the Dragons, as Pick also reports the team is considering relocating and changing their name to Beijing.
