Report: Jason Terry opts for 1-year deal with Rockets over Pelicans, Jazz
Jason Terry has decided to re-sign with the Houston Rockets, according to Shams Charania of RealGM.
Terry had long been linked to a Rockets return, but the New Orleans Pelicans are said to have made a strong push for the 16-year veteran. The Utah Jazz, now without Dante Exum for the season, also had a strong dialogue with Terry's camp.
While playing with Anthony Davis and under Alvin Gentry was surely intriguing, it's believed the Rockets landing Ty Lawson and further improving their core helped seal the deal with "The Jet."
The deal is reportedly for one-year at the $1.5-million veteran minimum.
The Rockets renounced their rights to Terry on July 20 but could have offered him up to $2.3 million, the remaining portion of their Mid-Level Exception, if that was necessary to keep him from leaving. Going over the minimum would have put the Rockets into a hard-cap scenario, heavily restricting their flexibility during the season, so the minimum seems the most likely scenario.
Terry should slide back into the reserve role he played for the Rockets last season, acting as the emergency point guard and backup shooting guard.
The 37-year-old averaged seven points and 1.9 assists in 21.3 minutes last season, knocking down 39 percent of his outside looks. His role expanded as the Rockets fought to the Western Conference finals without Patrick Beverley, with Terry taking over the starting reins and averaging 9.2 points and 2.8 assists in 28.6 minutes.
Over 1,213 career games with five teams, the league's third all-time leading 3-point shooter has averaged 14.8 points and 4.2 assists with a 38-percent mark from long-range.
