Chuck Hayes no longer signing with Rockets
Chuck Hayes is not signing with the Houston Rockets, after all.
While Hayes and the Rockets reportedly agreed to a one-year deal at the veteran's minimum in late July, Calvin Andrews of BDA Sports Management announced Thursday that Hayes is no longer headed to Houston.
As Andrews explained to Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports, the decision came from the Rockets:
Chuck Hayes is not signing with the Rockets.
Due to limited roster flexibility other financial considerations, Chuck Hayes will not be signing with the Rockets as previously announced. Chuck is very interested in continuing his playing career although he has received multiple offers to accept NBA coaching/front office jobs. Chuck's near future plans are to go into a coaching/front office career, however Hayes has spent a lot of time preparing and training for this upcoming season. Many observers has said he looks in better shape than he has in years. Chuck and his agents are exploring if there are other teams interested in him playing this year.
Hayes wasn't linked to any other teams during the free agency period. The Rockets' change of plans so late in the offseason, when roster spots have become scarce, could make it difficult for the 32-year-old to find a home.
Accounts suggest Hayes is a strong leader and terrific locker-room presence - and teams reaching out about coaching positions seems to confirm that - but his on-court utility is fairly limited. A ground-bound 6-foot-6 center, Hayes played sparingly for the Toronto Raptors in 2014-15, averaging 8.8 minutes in 29 appearances while putting up 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.
