NCAA to experiment with team foul rules during NIT
The NCAA rules committee announced Monday that the 2017 National Invitation Tournament will be played with experimental rules, including resetting team fouls to zero at the end of 10-minute segments in each half.
Also approved for use during the postseason event is a rule which resets the shot clock to 20 seconds instead of 30 seconds when the ball is inbounded to the front court.
Resetting team fouls means the one-and-one free-throw bonus will not be used, with teams instead shooting two foul shots on these occasions.
- Each team is limited to four fouls during each 10-minute segment.
- Each foul exceeding the limit of four per segment will result in two free throws.
- In overtime periods, the foul limit will drop from four team fouls to three.
There have previously been discussion around switching the men's game from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters, a move the women's game made in 2015. The new rule essentially does that without actually using a quarter system.
Meanwhile, the decision to set the shot clock to 20 seconds instead of 30 also includes incidents following a foul, or when the game is stopped for an official's reason. This change has been made with the goal of adding numerous possessions throughout the contest for each team.
