UNC selects Hubert Davis as Roy Williams' successor
North Carolina has opted for a familiar face to succeed Roy Williams as head coach of the men's basketball team.
The Tar Heels announced former player and longtime assistant Hubert Davis as their new head coach Monday, five days after Williams stepped down.
"I'm proud, thankful, humbled, and appreciative of being your new men's basketball coach for the University of North Carolina," Davis said.
Davis' hiring comes after the university called an emergency board of trustees meeting earlier Monday, according to Brendan Marks of The Athletic. Tar Heels assistant Steve Robinson, UNC Greensboro coach Wes Miller, and Vanderbilt coach Jerry Stackhouse also reportedly interviewed for the position.
Davis, 50, had served as Williams' assistant since 2012 following a 12-year NBA career that included stops with the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks. The Tar Heels' all-time leader in career 3-point percentage is North Carolina's first new bench boss since Williams was appointed ahead of the 2003-04 campaign.
Williams, a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, announced his retirement last Thursday following 33 seasons in charge of Kansas and North Carolina. The legendary coach amassed a 903-264 career record. He guided the Tarheels to three national championships in 2005, 2009, and 2017.
Davis is the first Black head coach of UNC's men's basketball program.
