No. 4 Arkansas upsets No. 1 Gonzaga to reach 2nd straight Elite Eight
Gonzaga's quest for its first national championship ended in heartbreaking fashion once again.
Arkansas upset the NCAA Tournament's No. 1 overall seed 74-68 in Thursday's Sweet 16 encounter to reach its second straight regional final under Eric Musselman.
The Zags have fallen short of a national title in each of their five appearances in the Big Dance as a top seed, tying Oklahoma for the most all time, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Senior guard JD Notae led the Razorbacks with 21 points, six boards, six assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Bulldogs star Drew Timme scored a game-high 25 points in a losing cause.
Arkansas' defense did a masterful job slowing down Gonzaga's top-ranked offense. The Bulldogs shot just 37.5% from the field - including 5-of-21 from deep - and coughed up the ball 15 times.
Freshman phenom Chet Holmgren was scoreless in the first half and in foul trouble for most of the contest. The 7-foot center finished with 11 points, 14 boards, and two blocks in what was likely his final appearance for the Zags.
Razorbacks forward Jaylin Williams had an excellent night on both ends, posting 15 points, 12 boards, three assists, and one swat. The sophomore held his own against Gonzaga's frontcourt duo, made a few timely triples, and took multiple charges.
Arkansas will take on Duke or Texas Tech in the Elite Eight. The Razorbacks last made the Final Four in 1995 when they fell 89-78 to UCLA in the national championship game.
