Hall of Famer Wright not ruling out coaching in NBA
Less than a week after Jay Wright's shocking retirement, the outgoing Villanova bench boss isn't ruling out coaching in the NBA.
"Right now, I definitely need a break," Wright said Tuesday during an appearance on ESPN's "Keyshawn, JWill & Max." "Right now, I'm looking forward to this (special assistant) position at Villanova. But honestly, down the road, I'd be lying - I don't know what I'm going to feel like."
Wright spent the past 21 seasons as the Wildcats' bench boss, guiding the school to a pair of national championships. The Hall of Famer's success at the college level has drawn attention from NBA clubs in the past.
The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly had Wright as a candidate for their job opening two years ago. He was also an assistant on Gregg Popovich's Team USA staff during last summer's Olympics in Tokyo.
Regardless of what transpires down the line, Wright stands by his decision to walk away from the game.
"I know I made the right decision because I don't think going into next year I'd be able to do the things I need to do to keep this program at a high level," Wright said. "But I'm going to take this year and really throw myself into this position at Villanova and then see what's out there. I just didn't want to be the coach at Villanova and not be 100% in."
