New Mexico State fires coach Greg Heiar amid hazing allegations

New Mexico State fired head coach Greg Heiar amid hazing allegations against members of the men's basketball team, school chancellor Dan E. Arvizu announced Tuesday.

"As I've stated previously, hazing has no place on our campus, and those found responsible will be held accountable for their actions," Arvizu said in a statement obtained by Geoff Grammer of the Albuquerque Journal.

"I am committed to the safety and well-being of all members of our campus community, as well as to the integrity of our university."

The school is currently conducting a full investigation into the allegations and won't make any further decisions regarding Heiar's coaching staff until that's complete.

New Mexico State canceled the remainder of its 2022-23 campaign Sunday after a police report detailed three players ganging up on a teammate and attacking him in a case that includes allegations of false imprisonment, harassment, and criminal sexual contact.

The Western Athletic Conference subsequently deemed the rest of the Aggies' games as forfeits.

New Mexico State hired Heiar just under a year ago. The Iowa native went 9-15 - including a 2-10 mark in conference play - during his lone campaign at the helm.
