Minnesota hires Colorado State's Niko Medved
Minnesota hired Colorado State's Niko Medved as its new head coach, Golden Gophers athletic director Mark Coyle announced Monday.
The two sides agreed to a six-year deal, pending approval from Minnesota's board of regents. An introductory press conference is scheduled for Tuesday.
"Niko is a Minnesota alum with a proven head coaching track record," Coyle said in a statement. "He is extremely passionate about coaching and developing young men and takes great pride in being from Minnesota. He has had success everywhere he has been, and we look forward to him leading our men's basketball program at his alma mater."
Medved spent the past seven seasons with the Rams, guiding the program to a 143-85 mark and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
The 51-year-old led Colorado State to this season's Mountain West Tournament crown and a second-round showing at the Big Dance.
Medved replaces Ben Johnson, who was fired after going 56-71 in four seasons with his alma mater.
The Golden Gophers haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2019.
