Former Baylor DE Shawn Oakman indicted on sexual assault charge
Former Baylor star Shawn Oakman was indicted Wednesday in a Texas court on a sexual assault charge stemming from an incident at his residence in April.
The 6-foot-8, 287-pound Oakman, who is Baylor's all-time sacks leader, was arrested for the alleged assault weeks before the 2016 NFL Draft and was not selected by a NFL team.
"Shawn Oakman maintains his innocence in regard to the recent accusations made against him, and he insists that the sexual relationship in this case was consensual," Oakman's attorney Michelle Tuegel told Tommy Witherspoon of the Waco Tribune-Herald. "It is unfortunate that this situation has been lumped in with other events that are unrelated."
Oakman is the third former Baylor player to be indicted for sexual assault in the past two years. The school's been heavily criticized concerning its handling of sexual assault accusations, particularly those involving student-athletes, and is currently being sued by several women who reported being assaulted on or near campus.
According to court documents, the police searched Oakman's home following the complaint and collected a DNA sample, his cell phone, and other items including a fitted sheet and flat sheet.
Oakman was investigated in 2013 but not arrested after a complaint from his former girlfriend. He came to Baylor following his dismissal from Penn State in 2012 after a shoplifting charge and violation of team rules.
