Western Michigan's Fleck: 'We deserve to be in the gosh darn Cotton Bowl'
Western Michigan improved to 13-0 with a 29-23 win over Ohio in the MAC championship game Friday night, and that has everyone wondering what's next for the Broncos.
As the top-ranked team from the Group of 5, Western Michigan would be afforded the opportunity to take part in one of the illustrious New Year's 6 bowl games, specifically the Cotton Bowl. Head coach P.J. Fleck believes his team has done more than enough to earn that honor.
"It's a historic day in Western Michigan history, and we deserve to be in the gosh darn Cotton Bowl, period," Fleck said after the game, according to ESPN's Dan Murphy. "Write it down."
Fleck's potty mouth aside, the Broncos will have to wait until Sunday to ultimately find out the decision from the College Football Playoff selection committee. The choice for a spot in the Cotton Bowl will be between Western Michigan and Navy, with the Midshipmen set to take on Temple in the AAC championship game Saturday.
That game is of little importance to Fleck, though, who asserts his team has already done enough to earn the spot.
"I don't think there's anybody to pay attention to," he said. "Who are we paying attention to? Why are we paying attention to anyone? We are 13-0. We are the best Group of 5 team in the country."
Complicating matters is the fact that Navy plays its annual game against Army on Dec. 10, six days after the bowl matchups are supposed to be selected. The committee could push back the announcement for the Cotton Bowl, unless it decided Western Michigan deserves to be ahead of Navy even if the Midshipmen win out.
