Watch: Nick Saban shows he's an elite QB

Kevin Liles-USA TODAY Sports

Alabama has been criticized in recent weeks for having former players like Trent Richardson and Blake Sims return to school and practice with the current team.

Instead of bringing in a former quarterback to help the Crimson Tide prepare for Washington in Saturday's Peach Bowl, head coach Nick Saban took on the role of quarterback, and looked quite impressive in this video from Tuesday's workout.

The 2017 NFL Draft class is thought to be weak on quarterbacks, so is Saban perhaps auditioning for a late push at the professional ranks as a player?

Saban was a defensive back at Kent State in the 1970's, but played quarterback in high school. Armed with that knowledge, let's break down his draft profile and see if he could be a fit for some teams in the later rounds.

Nick Saban Bio

Position: QB
Hometown: Fairmont, West Virginia
School: Kent State/Alabama
Height: 5-6
Weight: 185 lbs.

Strengths

  • Very intense competitor
  • Exceptionally high football IQ, reads defenses at an expert level
  • Loves football, with little interest in outside hobbies or activities
  • Proven ability at elevating those around him

Weaknesses

  • At 65 years old, would be 17 years older than George Blanda was in 1976 when he set the record for oldest player
  • His advanced age certainly leads questions about durability
  • At 5-foot-6, he would be the shortest quarterback in the league and among the shortest players of all time
  • Lack of arm strength could be an issue
  • Won't be allowed to wear straw hat during games, which could lead to him becoming uncomfortable

Outlook

While NFL teams will fall in love with Saban's preparation and ability to read a defense, his lack of arm strength and advanced age make him impossible to draft, even in a perceived weak quarterback class. Luckily, he's pretty good at winning championships in the college game and throwing 10-15 yard pass patterns in practice.
