West Virginia's Grier eligible for opener against Virginia Tech

West Virginia doesn't play its first game for over two months, but the Mountaineers got a major win on Tuesday as the NCAA deemed quarterback Will Grier eligible to play at the start of the season.

Head coach Dana Holgorsen made the announcement on Twitter, meaning Grier will be under center for the massive opening weekend tilt with Virginia Tech on Sept. 3rd.

Grier transferred to West Virginia from Florida after being suspended for a year due to a positive PED test in the 2015 season. Holgorsen and the Mountaineers pursued a waiver for the quarterback to be eligible for the 2017 campaign since he already sat out last year as a transfer.

The former four-star recruit showed flashes of brilliance through six games with the Gators in his freshman season, throwing for over 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 12-of-18 performance for 202 yards in the West Virginia spring game had the crowd buzzing, and he could put up monster numbers in Holgorsen and offensive coordinator Jake Spavital's system.
