Predicting the 1st loss for the remaining unbeaten Power 5 teams

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

With some surprising results last weekend across the country, the number of unbeaten Power 5 conference teams has dropped to 17 through four weeks of the season.

Two of the remaining teams play each other Friday night, so that number is guaranteed to drop before Saturday's action, but there will be more than one surrendering its perfect record this weekend.

Here's when each of the remaining undefeated programs will likely lose its first game this season.

SEC

Alabama

To the shock of nobody, Alabama is undefeated to start the 2017 season. Nick Saban has reached 4-0 with the Crimson Tide in every season except two, and sees his team firing on all cylinders after a 59-0 win Saturday over Vanderbilt.

First-loss prediction: Undefeated national champion

Georgia

After absolutely drilling Mississippi State 31-3 on Saturday, Georgia looks like the only challenger to Alabama in the SEC this year. While the Bulldogs should win the East, they will get to the championship game with one loss thanks to a tough road trip to Auburn in Week 11.

First-loss prediction: Nov. 11 at Auburn

Big Ten

Michigan

Michigan's defense looks to be among the best in the country once again, and if it can get steady quarterback play, the Wolverines could be the class of the Big Ten. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened all season, and Penn State will be looking for revenge of last year's drubbing with a home date set for Oct. 21.

First-loss prediction: Oct. 21 at Penn State

Penn State

Penn State barely escaped Iowa with a win Saturday night, but should cruise into the meeting with Michigan in four weeks still undefeated. While the Nittany Lions are likely to win at home against the Wolverines, the following week's road trip to Ohio State will be extremely difficult.

Next: vs. Indiana
First-loss prediction: Oct. 28 at Ohio State

Wisconsin

Wisconsin looks as good as anybody in the country through the opening four weeks, and has a very favorable schedule the remainder of the season. The Badgers will be in tough against Michigan in Week 12, but should get to the Big Ten title game undefeated.

Next: vs. Northwestern
First-loss prediction: Big Ten championship game

Minnesota

P.J. Fleck has checked all the boxes in his first month with Minnesota, as the Golden Gophers have dominated their opponents through three games. Minnesota should get through its home game against Maryland this week, but a road trip to Purdue the following Saturday will be the program's first defeat.

First-loss prediction: Oct. 7 at Purdue

Big 12

Oklahoma

It was closer than it needed to be against Baylor on Saturday, but Oklahoma got to 4-0 with a 49-41 victory. The Sooners look unbeatable through four games, but will lose a shootout on the road at Oklahoma State in Week 10.

Next: vs. Iowa State
First-loss prediction: Nov. 4 at Oklahoma State

TCU

TCU looked absolutely dynamite in its impressive road win against Oklahoma State on Saturday, but are poised for a letdown at home against a high-powered West Virginia this week.

Texas Tech

Texas Tech has emerged with two straight wins in one-possession games to sit 3-0 on the year but faces a very tough task with Oklahoma State this weekend. The Cowboys will surely be fired up after getting humbled at home by TCU last Saturday.

First-loss prediction: Sept. 30 vs. Oklahoma State

Pac-12

USC

USC pulled away late to secure a win over Cal this past weekend, but faces the always-challenging road trip to Washington State on Friday night. Expect points in that one, and a beat-up Trojans team will fall to the Cougars' aerial assault.

First-loss prediction: Sept. 29 at Washington State

Washington

Chris Petersen once again has Washington rolling, and with a very favorable schedule, don't be shocked if the Huskies return to the Pac-12 championship game this season. They won't get there undefeated however, as Oregon will take them out in Seattle on Nov. 4.

Next: at Oregon State
First-loss prediction: Nov. 4 vs. Oregon

Washington State

Washington State doesn't exactly have the most impressive resume through four weeks of the season, but can build that significantly with a win over USC on Friday. It will do so before dropping a game the following week at Oregon.

First-loss prediction: Oct. 7 at Oregon

Utah

Utah emerged from Arizona with a big win Friday night but are poised for a letdown against Stanford in two weeks.

ACC

Clemson

Clemson's defensive line looks to be unstoppable through four games, but the mobility of Josh Jackson and Virginia Tech's home crowd will be too much this Saturday.

First-loss prediction: Sept. 30 at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech

A win over Clemson this weekend will be a massive resume boost to Virginia Tech, but they will finish the regular season with one loss thanks to a Nov. 4 road trip to Miami.

First-loss prediction: Nov. 4 at Miami

Miami

Miami has only played two games due to Hurricane Irma, but has looked solid in both. While it will get past Duke this weekend, the home-field advantage for Florida State will do the program in on Oct. 7.

First-loss prediction: Oct. 7 at Florida State

Wake Forest

Wake Forest is surprisingly 4-0 on the season but face a big test Saturday with Florida State coming to town. The Seminoles are certainly weaker without Deondre Francois, but have enough talent to get the road win.
