Nick Saban for the Senate?
At least a few Alabama residents think it would be a good idea. USA Today's Steve Berkowitz compiled data from the Alabama State Canvassing Board and found that at least 421 voters wrote in the Crimson Tide head coach as their choice for the U.S. Senate seat Dec. 12 over candidates Doug Jones and Roy Moore. That figure doesn't include misspellings of Saban's name.
Jones won the election in a major victory for the Democrats, but Saban receiving that many votes is a story of its own. A total of 22,852 write-in votes were recorded, so the coach received about 2 percent of those.
Around the time of the election, some suggested that write-ins for Saban could sway the election in Jones' favour. However, Jones beat Moore by 21,924 votes, a much bigger margin.
Saban wasn't the only sports figure that voters added to their ballots. Alabamians also wrote in Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, former coach Tommy Tuberville, and NBA legend Charles Barkley.
