Report: Michigan AD, Harbaugh discussing contract extension
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel and head coach Jim Harbaugh have had recent conversations about a contract extension, David Jesse of Detroit Free Press reports.
The potential new deal would offer Harbaugh a lower base salary and buyout figure compared to his current deal, which is set to expire after the 2021 season, a source told Jesse.
Harbaugh's future at Michigan became uncertain after a series of disappointments in recent years, including a 2-4 start to the 2020 campaign. The coach, who joined the Wolverines in 2015, has won just one of five bowl games despite posting a 47-18 record over the first four campaigns.
The 56-year-old has also struggled against Ohio State, losing all five of Michigan's meetings versus its archrivals under his tenure - the Buckeyes have outscored the Wolverines 221-126 in that span.
Harbaugh is aware he needs real staff change if he stays at Michigan after the season, according to Austin Meek and Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic.
The Wolverines resumed football activities Monday after facing a COVID-19 outbreak that paused their practices and forced the cancellation of last Saturday's game against Maryland.
Michigan is scheduled to play Ohio State on Saturday.
