Auburn hires Boise State's Harsin as new HC
Auburn has found Gus Malzahn's replacement.
The Tigers hired Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin as their new sideline boss, the school announced Tuesday.
"I'm incredibly excited and humbled for the opportunity to be at a place like Auburn University," Harsin said. "I knew it would take a special opportunity to get me out of Boise and Auburn is exactly that, the chance to compete at the highest level for one of the greatest programs in college football. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the coaches and players in the Southeastern Conference but am ready to help build a foundation at Auburn where we can consistently compete for championships."
Harsin is the 28th head coach in the history of the football program.
He joined Boise State in 2014 and posted a 69-19 record, including a 5-2 mark this season. Harsin led the Broncos to six bowl appearances and three Mountain West Conference titles.
The 44-year-old was due to make $1.86 million at Boise State this year, according to James Crepea of The Oregonian. His buyout is $250,000, per 247Sports' Brandon Marcello.
Auburn's head coaching job became vacant after Malzahn was fired two weeks ago. The 2013 SEC Coach of the Year posted a 68-35 record over eight seasons with the Tigers.
Several names were linked to the Auburn job, but Harsin was a top target since the program's search began, a source told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
This marks the second time that Harsin has replaced Malzahn in a head coaching role. He took over the job at Arkansas State after Auburn hired Malzahn following the 2012 campaign.
