Todd Haley, Kevin Sumlin headline new USFL coaches
The USFL announced Todd Haley, Kevin Sumlin, Mike Riley, and Bart Andrus as its first four head coaches on Thursday.
Haley, who previously coached the Kansas City Chiefs and enjoyed stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns as an offensive coordinator, will take over the Tampa Bay Bandits.
Sumlin will command the sidelines with the Houston Gamblers. He accumulated a 95-63 record with Houston, Texas A&M, and Arizona in the NCAA. His most recent stint came with Arizona, though he was fired in 2020 after struggling that season.
Riley will coach the New Jersey Generals. The 68-year-old spent 1999-01 as the then-San Diego Chargers head coach, putting up a 14-34 record. He's also coached in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and served as the sideline boss for Oregon State and Nebraska. He earned winning records during his tenures in the CFL and NCAA.
Andrus will serve as head coach for the Philadelphia Stars. He previously had stints in NFL Europe along with a season as coach of the Toronto Argonauts.
President of football operations Brian Woods said adding the four experienced coaches "speaks to the quality of the league" the USFL is building.
The USFL is set for an April 16 kickoff with eight teams playing a 10-game schedule. The remaining four head coaches will be announced in the future.
