5-star recruit Mike Matthews commits to Tennessee as No. 1 ATH in 2024
Five-star recruit Mike Matthews is committing to Tennessee's 2024 class, he announced Wednesday.
Matthews is the top-ranked athlete and No. 5 overall recruit in the ESPN 300. The Georgia native is expected to play as a wideout for the Volunteers, though he also has experience as a defensive back. Many experts list him as the No. 1 receiver in the nation in 2024.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder picked Tennessee over finalists USC, Clemson, and Georgia.
"It was really a gut feeling. … I had a good time with all the players and coaches, and I just really enjoyed it over there," Matthews said.
He added: "Tennessee was just a great school for me. I have a good relationship with (head coach Josh) Heupel and everybody else on the staff."
Tennessee's 2024 recruiting class now features nine ESPN 300 prospects, including two other top-100 and four-star recruits: athlete Jonathan Echols and quarterback Jake Merklinger.
