Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens is expected to miss the 2024 season after sustaining a lower-body injury in the team's scrimmage Saturday, sources told ESPN's Max Olson and Pete Thamel.

Owens was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2023 after rushing for 385 yards and three touchdowns. He also led all true freshmen in the SEC with 743 all-purpose yards and averaged 20.8 yards per kick return.

"Rueben Owens suffered a lower leg injury in our scrimmage on Saturday. I will address his injury at my next media availability," head coach Mike Elko said in a statement obtained by Gigem 247's Carter Karels.

The Aggies boast plenty of depth at halfback despite Owens' injury. Le'Veon Moss and Amari Daniels are among the veterans expected to carry the bulk of the load. Texas A&M also brought in EJ Smith, son of NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, via the transfer portal this offseason.

Owens, a native of El Campo, Texas, was a four-star signee of the Aggies' 2023 recruiting class, per the ESPN 300.

Texas A&M is poised to begin its first season with Elko at the helm. The Aggies will open the 2024 season against Notre Dame on Aug. 31.
